  • JaJuan's mom LaWanda helps JaJuan with his homework at the shelter. There are over 3,000 homeless children in the Birmingham City school system. 8 year old JaJuan Tanniehill is one of those children. He is a first grader at Norwood Elementary School and lives at the Salvation Army shelter with his mother Lawanda and his 4 year old brother Mythias. Every morning, the Salvation Army bus takes JaJuan to school while his mother goes to classes to obtain her GED.

  • JaJuan gets his dinner from the Salvation Army's dining room.
  • JaJuan suffers from migraine attacks, his mother feels that the stress of moving into the shelter has caused them to become a regular occurrence.
  • The school lost heat for several days and JaJuan had to borrow a jacket to stay warm.
  • Ms. Mobley helps JaJuan, deep in thought, spell out a word for his worksheet. Math and gym are JaJuan's favorite subject, and he is currently on honor roll.
  • JaJuan is often outgoing in the classroom and enjoys the positive reinforcement his work often receives.
  • JaJuan jumps over the rope during a gym class, his favorite time of the school day other then lunch and math.
  • JaJuan and Deshazio, his best friend, play in the hallway. His teacher, Mrs. Mobley describes the pair as 'active' and often need to be reminded to settle down during class.
  • JaJuan tries to focus on his homework in the Salvation Army playroom while his little brother Mythias, 4, plays on a toy car.
